This Week in Texas discusses teacher recruitment, pay and retention with panel of political insiders in the fifth episode!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – This week’s fifth episode in Texas brings viewers a second episode focused on education.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath and the chairs of the Texas House and Senate Education Committee join ABC13 political journalist Tom Abrahams as they discuss teacher recruitment and student performance.

This episode will include a report on teacher recruitment efforts in the Houston Independent with ABC13 anchor Myra Moreno and insight from a panel of political insiders.

HISD began the 2022-2023 school year with 95% of teacher positions filled, ABC13 reported in late August.

The county said it will take administrative staff with teaching degrees and place them in schools for the second year and will also start the year with long-term alternatives.

Teachers at HISD are getting an 11% increase this year, making them some of the highest-paid teachers in the region, but that wasn’t enough to hire teachers.
